Microsoft 365 Education
Microsoft 365 Education is the platform — Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, Class Notebook, and identity — that most colleges and universities standardize on. Teameo adds the SIS integration and class management layer that Microsoft 365 Education doesn't ship with.
What is Microsoft 365 Education?
Microsoft 365 Education (formerly Office 365 Education) is Microsoft's bundle of cloud productivity tools licensed for educational institutions. It includes Microsoft Teams for Education, Exchange Online, OneDrive for Business, SharePoint, Outlook, Class Notebook (OneNote), and identity management through Entra ID. Three main tiers exist: A1 (free for qualified institutions, web-only apps), A3 (full desktop apps, advanced management), and A5 (adds advanced security, analytics, and compliance).
The surfaces that matter for higher education
- Microsoft Teams for Education — the learning platform: Class teams, channels, meetings, Assignments, Grades.
- Class Notebook — OneNote-based notebook for course content, per-student sections, content library.
- Outlook & Exchange Online — institutional email, calendar, room resources.
- OneDrive for Business — per-user cloud storage, tied to institutional identity.
- SharePoint — departmental sites, course material libraries, document management.
- Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) — institutional identity and SSO.
What Microsoft 365 Education doesn't include
Microsoft 365 Education covers productivity, collaboration, and identity. It does not cover the operational connection between your student information system (SIS/ERP) and those surfaces. Specifically, it lacks:
- Higher-ed SIS integration. Microsoft's School Data Sync (SDS) covers basic K-12 cases but not college/university SIS platforms (Jenzabar, PeopleSoft, Banner, Workday Student, Omnivox, Clara, COBA).
- Automated class provisioning at term turnover. Class creation, Class Notebook setup, and archive all default to manual.
- Meta-course fusion for multi-section courses.
- Audit logging scoped for Law 25 / RGPD compliance beyond generic Microsoft 365 audit logs.
